Shanty Town Houses

These colorful houses, made from fused plastic bags, are inspired by the little shacks I saw in the Caribbean , the shacks were so colorful and remind me of the resilience of the human spirit despite poor conditions.

Cirque de Avion

These birds were cut from a larger fused piece I had made from recycled plastic bags. They looked like they wanted to join the circus, so I put them under a big top made from a pillow case my dear friend Kim Brayman gave me! They are headed down to Columbia City Gallery in Seattle, WA.

Curating this show of 10 artists has proven to be one of the highlights of my art career thus far! Planning the reception was equally exhilarating. We were honored to have 3 high school student from Roosevelt High for our musical pleasure, Omari, Nan and Alix . The art spoke to those who came and people engaged with one another over lovely food and wine! Once again a reminder of how art does allow us to “commune” with one another and connect . An aspect that too often is missing from our screen watching world. Here are a few highlights from the show! ENJOY!

Birds of Rememberence by Nadine Smith

I do not know if I am painting birds in this series to remember or to release. I look for birds that remind me of someone, of something. Sketching the found bird makes me think of another time and I am taken in by the posture of their head, the stance of their feet, the color of their feathers. I am reminded of flight as I dissect each one with my paint and ink and consider how there are more of them than me. I place birds on my canvas and wonder if they are flying spirits or tight rope walkers balancing life and death. I attempt to create them, one by one, in their essence and then bring them together to remember something that I hold dear, and to release them.

These bird Avengers are back from fighting the war on waste! Battle worn they have lost limbs but not courage! Made from recycled plastics that friends have passed onto me rather than the earth! I call this series ‘Riders on the wind’. They are defenders of the earth!

These lovelies were made out of vintage flour sacks I bought in Cashmere, WA and painted by squishing them into a paint palette . I added stenciling and fibers for extra flair!
